For centuries, the Baltic Sea was both: a sea of peaceful trade cooperation & cultural exchange, but also a sea of confrontation and war. We observe with concern the current militarization and transformation of our Baltic Sea and the Arctic into a NATO frontline directed against our neighbor & economic partner Russia and the escalation into an economic war characterized by sanctions & embargoes. We remember better times, such as the Final Act of the “Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe” (CSCE) in Helsinki in 1975 and the opportunity, referred to as the “peace dividend” in 1990, to overcome axis and bloc thinking and promote European cooperation for the benefit of all.
Are power elites in the EU and NATO preparing a Nordic War 2.0? We know from the recent history of the 1st and 2nd World Wars how destructive this ended. We citizens in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea say - as we did in 1945 - NEVER AGAIN! How can the peace movement in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea promote the peaceful perspective of an effective security architecture? How can peace-loving people in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea work together to free the Baltic Sea from the grip of NATO and make the Baltic Sea a sea of peace?
